How to Handle Chaos in Your Life

A lot of people are talking about how cultivating clarity and seeing reality with greater focus are some of their intentions for the year (and the decade, really!)

Yet, even with clarity, vision and focus… there’s one thing that inevitably creeps into even the most well-laid plans

Chaos!

Ah yes, a trusted tango partner to Murphy’s Law (anything that can go wrong, WILL go wrong). Chaos seems to shuffle its feet onto the dance floor of your life at the exact moment when it can cause the most disruption.

But here’s something we’ve learned on our journey…

All chaos completes itself in peace.

We got a taste of this during our podcast launch party, which happened a few days before Christmas 2019 in Los Angeles.

Mind you, we had 30 episodes recorded, a guest list of 65 people, the venue sorted, the food procured, the playlist was perfect… we were feelin’ footloose and fancy-free to share this blessed experience with our good friends and business colleagues.

We arrived at the venue 3 hours before the start of the party and things with setup were going smoothly. Jason’s mom came into town, and we had a couple of good friends helping out.

But let us tell you: 3 hours goes FAST when there’s an entire studio to convert to a party. Suddenly, we had just 15 minutes until the party starts… and the food wasn’t even set up yet.

And then three guests arrived early. Do we make them wait outside, invite them in, or just hand them some crackers and tell them to come back in a few minutes?

And, then, of course, chaos showed up right on time; frothing at the mouth and pounding drunkenly at the front door screaming, “Hey, I didn’t technically send in my RSVP, but, uh, my friend told me about this party, so I figured I’d come and try the cheese wheels!”

There was a mad dash to set up the food, greet the early guests, make sure the sound system was working and ensure the gifting suite was fully prepared (which it wasn’t!)

The last 15–25 minutes of the party prep FELT like 5 hours. It was a lot to handle in a short amount of time, and we’re still amazed we pulled it off.

Once the party got going, however, things smoothed out a bit. People were eating, laughing, dancing, getting tarot card readings… the vibe was beautiful. We had a couple of entrepreneurs set up a vegan Mexican food stand in front of the venue and everything seemed to be groovy.

Until, uh, it started raining. Out of nowhere.

The weather report didn’t say anything about RAIN!!?!? Not just a light drizzle, mind you, but freakin’ raining cats and dogs. Not the optimal way to enjoy an outdoor taco tent. So, the food sales weren’t as brisk as they’d hoped and people ended up with soggy burritos. Ughhhhh. Chaos struck again!!!

All of this is to say, at the end of the night, when the last guest went home around 10:30pm, we had a moment together where we looked at each other, shared a congratulatory embrace, and said, “WE DID IT!”

Through months of preparation, last-minute challenges, and things not going according to even our best-laid plans, we did it. The joy and relief we felt were monumental… we had just birthed a podcast.

All of this is to say… even if you’re super clear, ultra-focused, have spent months preparing for something, and then show up and do your best… chaos will always be a factor. Preparing for the unexpected and being able to improvise and change the plan at a moment’s notice is an extraordinary skill set to practice and (hopefully) master someday.

So, if you find yourself in a moment of chaos, just remember, it’s there to help you grow, to learn more about yourself and your deeper powers… and that it WILL complete itself in peace. You just have to try to weather the storm with grace.

We want to invite you to take a listen to the podcast. We’ve put a lot of heart and soul (and danced with a lot of chaos) to make it happen.

We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoy making it for you!
